A long weekend is coming and you haven’t booked any flights out of Singapore yet. You do an online search and discover that the tickets have gone through the roof. The HORROR!

Well, worry not. There’s might still be a way.

If you are cash-strapped but still really insist on flying out of country, and can tolerate some possible inconvenience (read: traffic jam) associated with crossing the Singapore-Malaysia border through Woodlands Checkpoint, you might want to check out the flights at Johor Bahru’s decent Senai Airport for an unforgettable last minute, last resort budget adventure trip!

From Johor’s Senai Airport, you can fly cheaply to many Malaysian cities and towns located in both Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo Island, and even internationally.

Domestically, you can fly to these destinations:

  • Kuala Lumpur (Peninsular Malaysia)
  • Miri (Borneo Island)
  • Kuching (Borneo Island)
  • Langkawi Island (Peninsular Malaysia)
  • Penang (Peninsular Malaysia)
  • Kuala Terengganu (Peninsular Malaysia)
  • Kota Kinabalu (Borneo Island)
  • Tawau (Borneo Island)
  • Sibu (Peninsular Malaysia)

There are plenty of adventures waiting for you in these places, for so much less. Perfect for the bold and adventurous!

Internationally, there are outbound flight options Senai Airport has to offer:

  • Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam
  • Bangkok, Thailand
  • Jakarta, Indonesia
  • Surabaya, Indonesia
  • Guangzhou, China

All these flights are with AirAsia.

Malaysia Airlines also serves Johor Bahru, so technically, you can fly to any Malaysia Airlines destination with a connecting flight to Kuala Lumpur.

Check out and compare flight prices flying through Johor Bahru’s Senai vs Singapore’s Changi by doing a search on your airline-of-choice’s official website. If you’re lucky, you might find them 50% cheaper.

Good luck!

  1. Handy post John. How much travel time would you set aside from Singapore?Whilst you may find cheaper flights, what would be the costs of getting to Senai (eg taxi from Singapore)? Finally, what is Senai airport like (if its anything like Bangkok’s Don Mueang it may be worth paying more for Changi’s conveniences)? Cheers!

    1. Hi, Richard! For me, border crossing is the most inconvenient part, although this is also highly variable. It could take 1 hour to 4 hours depending on the time and day you’re leaving Singapore for a long weekend break. It took me 1 hour to cross the border on my recent trip to Miri. From the border, an Uber ride takes 20 minute to reach the Senai Airport. Senai is much smaller than Bangkok’s Don Mueng but modern, and has fast food and coffee shops as you would expect. Speed isn’t, of course, same as Changi but if you can deal with this minor inconveniences, you would save heaps. I’d say if money is not a problem, go for Changi but if you’re desperate and has tight budget and want to get out of Singapore, you can try Senai. I’ll considering to fly there again and looking at where to go next now!
